Just In – Chestnuts

November 27th, 2010

When we start talking about chestnuts, you know Christmas can’t be far away.  But really they’re an autumn fruit (yes, they’re a fruit) and we’d be mad to only eat them when wearing silly hats and trying to be nice to the relatives.  So, we’re using them right now in lots of different ways to show you what cracking little nuts they can be: sweet, soft and indefinably nutty.  Ours come from south-west France via the Parisian markets (only the best, naturally).  Try our chestnut, pancetta and cabbage soup, or our chestnut and fontina stuffed agnolotti or maybe you’ll go all traditional and choose our festive chestnut-and-prune stuffing with roast turkey.  Round it off with chestnut tiramisu.

Call us on 0191 232 1331.

Just in – Fennel

July 27th, 2010

You either love it or hate it  -  fennel, that is.  A bit like marmite.  (Not the taste, silly, people’s reactions.)  If you’re the former, you’re in for a treat right now.  Fennel is at its best from now until early September, a lovely summer vegetable.  Its distinctive flavour  -  remember aniseed balls? -  can be addictive.  At Vivo, we like it so much, we have to ration how many times a week we eat it.  Well, it is one of the main ingredients of absinthe …

Come and see what we’ve done with it.  Thinly sliced in a salad, either as a simple, refreshing first course or as an accompaniment to grilled fish.  Or maybe braised with Parmesan cheese and eaten with grilled meat.  It’s also good as tempura.  It’s even pretty good cooked in sugar syrup and served as dessert…

Caffè Vivo goes ‘Al Fresco’

July 19th, 2010

Here are a few thoughts. Instead of rushing to the office, stop; have a coffee and read the morning papers. Meet with a friend to share an Anti Pasto board over a glass or two of wine. Indulge yourself with one of our famous ice cream Coppas and enjoy the opportunity to be outside?

Don’t forget that we serve food all day and our sandwich menu is being re-vamped for the summer weather, so if you need a late lunch we’ve got it covered. The British summer doesn’t last nearly long enough so let’s make the most of it!

Al Fresco: adv. In the fresh air; outdoors: dining alfresco.
